A Child Lives in Games, Chats, Messengers and AI Assistants. What Reaches Them Is Not One Thing

Contact and Exploitation
40% of children make new friends through games. Behind a borrowed identity may be an adult offering in-game currency in exchange for photos or favours, opening the door to blackmail and grooming. The end-result may be detrimental
Cyberthreats Evolve
Harassment that follows the child home, humiliation in group chats, exclusion adults never see
Scams and Addiction
Scams, gambling mechanics, and casino-like games expose children to risks far beyond social media
Misinformation and Fake News
Propaganda at volume, bots in open comments, recruitment paid in game currency. The Financial Times has covered cases that ended in national-security charges
Data and AI
Personal data may flow into AI models outside the EU. At the same time, overly agreeable AI can become a trusted voice that reinforces or encourages harmful behaviour
Ignat Bobrovich, Founder“When I was bullied at school, it had an end of business day. I came home, closed the door, and until morning it stopped. Today that door does not exist.”Cybersecurity Evolves and It Has Much Broader Meaning
Cybersecurity now goes far beyond attacks and hacks. Just as cars evolved to require built-in safety measures, today’s digital environment requires active and passive safeguards to protect children

The Forbidden Fruit Effect: When Restrictions Create New Risks
Below is the contact-and-exploitation family taken apart from start to finish. The other four run through the same child and the same platforms, and break in the same seven places

- 0Trust gapChildren still want an online life, and may learn to bypass restrictions through VPNs, second devices, or fake IDs
- 1ContactAn adult approaches a child in a game, posing as a peer
- 2RewardIn-game currency the parents will not pay for buys the first obligation
- 3MoveThe conversation moves to a messenger with no moderation
- 4LeverageMore digital rewards are offered in exchange for a photo or service, creating material that can later be used for blackmail
- 5Pandora boxMore is demanded under threat of exposure. The trust gap makes children even less likely to seek help from adults
Action is essential. But regulation and restrictions alone can create new risks
Europe Has Recognised the Problem and Is Building the First Layer
The DSA sets clear obligations to protect minors, supported by the Commission’s age-verification blueprint and national initiatives. We see these measures as an essential first layer, not something to replace. But age controls alone cannot address risks across gaming, AI, messaging, and other digital environments where children increasingly interact and build relationships
A Gate Is a First Step, Not the Programme
Australia introduced a social media ban for under-16s on 10 December 2025, the first of its kind. Millions of accounts were removed, and children described getting around the checks: borrowed data, another device, an older sibling passing the face scan. Demand for VPNs rose
The fence is not weak. The child wants to climb it — and once they have, a bad experience carries two admissions instead of one: that they broke the rule, and that something happened
Children Are Asking for Protection They Can Trust
In the EU Children’s Participation Platform’s September 2025 online consultation, 6,343 respondents aged 12–17 from all 27 Member States shared their experiences. Their answers call for practical support, simpler reporting and adults who follow up
These describe the children who answered, not the population: nearly three quarters of responses came from four countries. They are a voice, not a prevalence estimate
We Are Not Building the Fence Higher. We Are Removing the Reason to Climb It
Valvur links the child, the parent, the school, the platform and the state into one loop. Openness and safe behaviour bring the child what they want, and risk gets noticed early. This works today, not in plans: the family app, the school module, on-device chat detection. Age verification doesn’t help to build the relationship between a parent and a child

Seven Places Where the Route Can Be Broken. That Can Be Improved With Valvur

- 1Before Contact: Trust, Resilience, MotivationBuilding trust and openness around children’s digital life
- 2Entry: Identity and AgeMaking identity verification understandable through gamification and empowering parental consent
- 3Reward Instead of ProhibitionMaking digital resilience and openness rewarding, while supporting learning and everyday responsibilities

- 4Moving Between PlatformsProviding active and passive protection across digital environments
- 5Connecting StakeholdersCreating a connected safety ecosystem across social media, gaming, audiovisual media, schools, families, and public institutions
- 6Early Alarming and BlockingBlocking threats at the source while preserving privacy and alerting parents only when serious risks arise
- 7Reporting When It Is SeriousAllowing to facilitate the reporting and on-time inclusion of law enforcement agencies when required
Two Sides of One Product

Amplified, Simplified and Protected

Building Digital Resilience

What Else Is in the System
Active Protection
Voice and text: bullying, grooming, blackmail, scams, attempts to move the child to another platform. Plugs into Discord, Roblox and the like
Safe Spaces
Fenced communities: a server only for children of certain age, school, location and other parameters. Plugs into Discord, Roblox and the like
Public-Space Monitoring
Detecting and blocking illegal ads, harmful misinformation, foreign propaganda, and illicit services across digital platforms, while providing early warnings of emerging scam waves
Simplifying Reporting
Enabling timely reporting, assessing serious incidents, and involving police or social services when necessary. Integrated with national systems
